When I first moved to Chillicothe Ohio I would take my son to this adorable little candy shop called Llyod’s Sweet Shoppe. It had decorations of the past and candies I’ve never heard of. As years past the sweetness of the little candy store started to fade as there were less and less items every time we visited. After 45 years of business Lloyd’s closed their doors and a new candy store came to town.
Grandpa Joe’s took over in November of 2017. I can only assume that the name comes from the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and by the cute cut out in front of the store I bet I’m right. As much as we were all sad to see Llyod’s Sweet Shoppe go I think we could all agree that it was time for a face lift.
The outside of the new candy store looks inviting and I couldn’t wait to take my kids to check it out. As soon as you walk in you can see candy from every generation.
“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of Pure imagination take a look and you’ll see into your imagination”
I could see the joy on my boy’s faces as they looked at rows and rows of candy.
Before we went to Grandpa Joe’s we heard from friends that they had a candy buffet and you could fit as much candy as you want into that box for only $5.00! I took my kids on Valentine’s day to let them fill up a box.
We didn’t know what to expect or what candy was on the buffet and when we got there we were a little reluctant to put certain candies in the box not knowing what was part of the buffet. After talking to the sweet ladies at the counter, Carma and Ally were more than happy to help us.
That saying “I’m like a kid in a candy store” was the perfect saying as I saw my children excited in Grandpa Joe’s candy store. They filled up their boxes to the rim! Your first thoughts on the boxes might be, “wow these boxes are small or I can get a lot of candy at another store for $5.00” and yes you may be correct. However, allowing my children to have the freedom to choose from a wide selection of candy and not just one bag of something made me feel like it was worth it. My youngest was a little more taken back by the fact that he could choose whatever he wanted, but after a couple of minutes he caught on and wanted one of everything. The greatest part is that if you can fit it in the box and the box closes you can have one of everything!
The store also has many other items such as an extremely large selection of old soda bottles, tons of novelty items and even astronaut ice cream. One of the first things that my youngest spotted when we walked in was Kinder surprise eggs which is very popular internationally.
We think Grandpa Joe’s candy store is absolutely amazing and looking forward to going back again soon. If you want to know more please visit Grandpa Joe’s Chillicothe.
